Defense: moving away

Chess is not all about attacking. You often have to make a defensive move. It is important that you know how you can defend your pieces.

An attacked piece can be defended in four ways:

Moving away: you move the attacked piece to a safe square
Blocking: you place another piece between the attacking piece and the piece that’s being attacked. This is also called interposing.
Capturing: you take the attacking piece.
Protecting: you guard the piece that is under attack. After a capture, you strike back.
